Kyrie Irving is back, and he scored on the first play

After 586 days away, Irving led Dallas with 17 points in a 132–115 win over Houston in Macao.

Dallas coach Dusty May drew up the opening possession for Kyrie Irving on Sunday, and Irving finished it with a reverse layup over Jabari Smith Jr. about 14 seconds in. The Mavericks' bench jumped up, and the crowd at the Venetian Arena got loud for a player who had not played a game since tearing the ACL in his left knee on March 3, 2025.

Irving finished with a team-high 17 points on 6-of-13 shooting, with three assists and two rebounds in about 22 minutes. He scored 14 of those points in the first half and sat out the fourth quarter. He also made both his preseason debut and his first appearance alongside reigning Rookie of the Year Cooper Flagg.

Irving told reporters he had been picturing that first basket for a long time and that he wanted to play aggressively and look like himself again. He also said a calf strain last December set back his rehab and helped decide that he would miss the whole 2025–26 season.

The win split the two-game China series. Houston took the opener on Friday, 135–117, behind an Alperen Şengün triple-double while Irving rested as planned. Dallas returns home to face New Orleans on Thursday and Atlanta on Saturday.

Jokić triple-double sparks Denver comeback

DEN 133 · CHI 128

Chicago shot 13 of 25 from three in the first half and led 68–59 at the break at Ball Arena on Sunday. Then Denver won the third quarter 40–26 and held on.

Nikola Jokić had 22 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists in 26 minutes, shooting 8 of 12. It was the first time this preseason that coach David Adelman left his starters in after halftime. Aaron Gordon scored 25 on 9-of-12 shooting, and Cam Whitmore sealed it with two free throws with 14 seconds left.

For the Bulls, Leonard Miller scored 26 off the bench on 11-of-14 shooting, and Chicago's reserves outscored Denver's 75–56.

Brown sits out his Boston return as Celtics roll

BOS 144 · PHI 106

Jaylen Brown's first night at TD Garden as a visitor ended before tip-off. The 76ers rested him on Saturday, along with LeBron James, Joel Embiid, Anfernee Simons and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. Brown went through a pregame workout on the parquet and mostly kept to himself.

Without its stars, Philadelphia lost 144–106 and fell to 1–2 in the preseason. Boston traded Brown to the Sixers in July for Paul George and draft picks, ending his 10 seasons with the Celtics.

The Celtics plan a tribute video when Philadelphia makes its first regular-season trip to Boston in January. The two teams meet again on Friday in Philadelphia to close the preseason.

Luke Kennard scored 20 and Jalen Green added 18 as Phoenix beat San Antonio on Saturday. Rookie center Khaman Maluach made his first preseason start and had 10 points and 15 rebounds, spending some of his minutes guarding Victor Wembanyama.

Wembanyama had 13 points, seven rebounds, a team-high six assists and two blocks in 22 minutes, but went 0 for 5 from three. Dylan Harper led the Spurs with 15, and De'Aaron Fox sat out.

San Antonio, the defending Western Conference champion, dropped to 0–2 and plays at Utah on Monday.
